The Heritage Class fare table

Queensland Rail publishes its fares in a simple grid, and the Heritage Class rows are the ones most visitors need. An adult pays AUD 58 one way or AUD 87 return, a child pays AUD 29 one way or AUD 43.50 return, and an Australian senior or pensioner pays AUD 46 one way or AUD 70 return.1 The family fare for two adults and two children is AUD 145 one way or AUD 217.50 return.1,5

The small print matters. Prices are per person, quoted in Australian dollars and subject to availability, and a child fare applies to travellers from 4 to 14 years of age inclusive, while babies and toddlers aged 0 to 3 ride without a fare.3 That makes the family fare worth a look whenever the party is exactly two adults and two children, and the single fares better when it is anything else.

We state these as Queensland Rail states them, in its own currency. We do not convert them, because the exchange rate moves and the operator may change the table at any time. The prices on this page are the published fares that apply before the rise on 1 April 2027, so treat them as a guide and confirm the final figure at the booking step.3,4

Gold Class and Heritage Plus fares

Gold Class costs more than Heritage by design. An adult pays AUD 115 one way or AUD 201 return, a child AUD 86 one way or AUD 157.50 return, and a senior or pensioner AUD 103 one way or AUD 184 return.2 The family Gold fare is AUD 373 one way or AUD 673.50 return, which is the clearest sign that the upgrade is a different product rather than a slightly better seat.2

Heritage Plus is the group class. Its fare applies to groups of 10 or more people and carries group fare conditions, and adult fares start from AUD 85 one way.11,12 A party that size should ask Queensland Rail for a quote rather than buying single tickets, as the group conditions may change what is on offer, and a quote also confirms which train has room for the whole party.

If you are choosing between classes, the cost gap is easier to judge on the same axis. The chart below sets the adult one-way fares of the classes next to the Skyrail fares, and our Gold Class page explains what the extra money buys on board, including which trains carry the premium carriages, so that you can decide whether the gap is worth paying.6

Discounts: seniors, locals and what Skyrail does not offer

Queensland Rail lists discounts for holders of pensioner concession cards and Seniors Cards issued by an Australian state or territory, with other concessions open to those who meet the conditions.16 The senior and pensioner fares in the table are the ready-made version of that discount for Australian cardholders, and visitors from overseas should plan on the adult fare unless Queensland Rail confirms otherwise.

Residents of Cairns and the surrounding area get a better deal: Queensland Rail gives local residents 20% off Heritage Class prices, with conditions.18 If you are visiting a local friend who qualifies, the saving belongs to them and not to you, so do not count on it for a holiday booking, and ask Queensland Rail about the conditions before you rely on it.

Skyrail takes a different line. It says plainly that discounts for pensioner or concession card holders are not offered at Skyrail, so a senior who saves on the train pays the full fare on the cableway.17 Keep that in mind when you build a train and Skyrail day, because the senior saving applies to one half of it only.

Booking direct, in a package or on a day trip

The Kuranda village site says bookings are highly recommended.8 The question of how to book the Kuranda Scenic Railway has three routes: through Queensland Rail directly, through a package that includes the train, or through a day trip that handles the tickets for you, as our listing does. The last route is the least work, because the listing covers pickup, the train and the cableway in one booking.

Direct bookings come with a generous change policy. Queensland Rail states that it keeps waiving fees for cancelling and rebooking a changed booking, and that if services are disrupted you can rebook for another day or take a full refund.9,20 Payment may need a card, since Queensland Rail sales points do not take cash.21

Skyrail and the train have separate terms. A booking made directly with Skyrail is refundable in full until the day before travel, but once you check in at the terminal changes are not possible.22,23 If you buy the train as part of a package, the package seller sets the rules, so read them before you pay.

Combined prices: train plus Skyrail

Skyrail sells its own packages that combine a one-way Skyrail with a one-way train. An adult pays AUD 145.50 and a child AUD 79.50 for the combined day, and Gold Class on the train adds AUD 57 per person one way or AUD 228 per family one way.15,24 Gold Class on that day runs only on the 9:30am, 9:55am and 3:30pm trains.25

Our listing is a different kind of product, priced in US dollars. It starts from $144 and covers hotel pickup in central Cairns, the train, Skyrail and free time in Kuranda. The two prices are in different currencies and bundle different extras, so they cannot be compared number for number, and the only honest comparison is to check both booking pages for your date.

The pairing page of this guide goes through the four package layouts and which order suits which traveller. For prices alone, remember that the train is a transport and sightseeing ticket, not a day pass: the markets, meals and wildlife parks in Kuranda are paid for separately, and a seasonal river cruise is an extra rather than part of our day.

What changes in 2027

Queensland Rail states that rail fares will increase by around 3.4% for travel from 1 April 2027, so the fares on this page apply to earlier dates.4 A booking for a date after that will price against the new table, so a trip planned for April should be checked against the updated fares rather than the ones here.

The other change to know about is closures. Queensland Rail does not run on Christmas Day or during planned maintenance closures, and Skyrail lists weeks when all railway services are cancelled for maintenance on the Kuranda Range, including Monday 2 to Sunday 8 November 2026.26,19 Later ones fall in May, June, October and November 2027, so a date near them deserves a quick check of the notices page.27

None of that changes the basic shape of the decision. A one-way ticket pairs with a different way down, a return ticket suits a traveller who wants to come back the same way, and a packaged day removes the arithmetic. Use the calculator below for the packaged options and the table above for the train alone, and book Kuranda Scenic Railway tickets once the date is clear.
