Where Kuranda is, and what sort of place it is

Kuranda, Queensland, is a rainforest village on top of the McAlister Range, about 330 m above sea level, inside the Wet Tropics World Heritage rainforests.1 The drive from Cairns takes about 35 minutes, and the village site notes that Kuranda is within easy reach of the beaches, Port Douglas, Mareeba and the Tablelands.2,8 About 3000 people live there, a small community for such a well-known stop.9

The place has a long history as somewhere people came to visit. Skyrail's potted history says Kuranda was first settled in 1885 and became a hub because it sat on the main railway line to Cairns.10 Since the early 1900s it has been known as a tourist destination, known for its wildlife attractions, markets, crafts, cafes and restaurants.11 The village site adds that Kuranda was officially surveyed in 1888.12

What you notice on arrival is the setting more than any single sight. Heritage-listed fig trees line the main street, and the village site recommends pausing to look at them.13 The rest is a compact cluster of shops, stalls and attractions that reward wandering rather than a fixed route, which suits a visit that is shaped by a train time or a Skyrail slot at the end of the day. Come with a loose plan and a firm departure time, and the village does the rest.

How the village markets differ

Kuranda has more than one market, and they are not the same. The Original Rainforest Market is open Monday to Sunday, 10 AM to 3 PM, while the Heritage Markets open Wednesday to Sunday, 10 AM to 3:30 PM.3 The markets have been part of the village's identity since the 1970s, and the first of them began in 1978 on land owned by the Honey House.21,22

The Heritage Markets are an all-weather covered market that has been established for over 30 years.23,24 That matters on a wet day: the Wet Tropics rainforest can receive up to 4,000 mm of rain in a year, and a roof over the stalls is welcome when it does.25 The Heritage Markets lie about a 15 minute walk from the station and the Skyrail terminal.7 Walkers from the station pass the Original Rainforest Market on the way to the covered Heritage Markets.

Stalls here cover Aboriginal artefacts, handmade leather goods, wood and jewellery, and stallholders will post purchases overseas.26 The village site also lists global and tropical food stalls, with live music and street performers.27 If you want cash, ATMs stand at both markets as well as at the BP service station and the Barron Falls Hotel.28 Check opening days before you plan a midweek visit; the Heritage Markets open Wednesday to Sunday only.

Skyrail recommends 2 to 3 hours in the village, while the village website suggests at least 4 to 6 hours for a day trip.29,5

Eating and drinking in the village

Food is one of the village's strengths. The village site describes a menu that runs from German sausages and Japanese noodles to French crepes, pies, curry and vegetarian dishes.41 Food is easy to find, and eateries are scattered from the main street to the markets, with a stall or cafe every few steps, and a stroll between the two passes plenty of lunch options.

Two places are worth knowing for their location, one at the station and one in the village. Kuranda Tea Rooms are on Platform 1 of the railway station, which makes them the nearest sit-down option if you arrive by train.16 The Butterfly Shop and Cafe Bar, in the village, runs an ice-cream bar with 39 scoop flavours alongside its licensed bar and cafe.42

Pay attention to how you pay. Skyrail itself takes cards only, but various attractions, shops and cafes in the village accept both cash and card.36 Lunch timing is also worth planning. The Skyrail slot you have booked for the way down is fixed to 15 minute blocks, so a long lunch needs to be set against a firm departure.43 Order early, eat well and leave a margin for the walk back to the terminal.

Wildlife without leaving the village

The village's wildlife attractions cluster together. Birdworld and Kuranda Koala Gardens sit inside the Heritage Markets and are open 7 days until 4 PM.6 Birdworld opens at 10 AM and Koala Gardens at 9:30 AM.14,15 Birdworld has over 350 birds roaming freely in an enclosed habitat, with the Southern Cassowary among them.40,56 The Australian Butterfly Sanctuary, a short distance away, is billed as the biggest butterfly flight aviary in the Southern Hemisphere.57

These attractions are the main reason a village stop turns from an hour into half a day. At Koala Gardens a koala can be patted for a souvenir photo, at extra cost, and the village site counts it among the few places that allow it; visitors can also pat and hand feed wallabies and kangaroos.31,39 The village site adds a life-sized Allosaurus replica for a selfie and a cultural dance performance to its list of other things to do.58

A few ground rules help. Dogs are welcome in some outdoor areas and on walking tracks, but they are not allowed inside Birdworld, Koala Gardens or the Butterfly Sanctuary.30 Entry fees, the Army Duck, the river cruise and Rainforestation have their own guide on this site; this section stays with what sits within walking distance of the markets.

Walks, lookouts and the Barron Falls

Kuranda has walking tracks for every age and fitness level, including what the village site calls the world's first Cassowary Art Trail.59 Popular tracks include the Jumrum Creek Walk and the Riverbank Walk, both with easy rainforest paths.60 Most tracks run through shady forest, but Davies Creek and the Barron River Walk offer little steady shade, and sunscreen, repellent and water are advised.38

A printed guide helps if you want to follow a route. The Visitor Information Centre hands out the self-guided Kuranda Nature Track brochure, and it is open 7 days from 10 AM to 4 PM.61,32 The free Explore Kuranda and Talking Trails apps also give a self-guided tour of the village, its history, public art and walking trails.62

The Barron Falls deserve a detour if the weather is right. Skyrail's Barron Falls station has the Edge Lookout with panoramic views of the gorge and the waterfall, and Skyrail suggests about 20 minutes there.46,17 The falls come into their own in the wet season, from December to March, when tropical rain brings the waterfall to life.37 The railway also pauses at Barron Falls for photographs.63

A checklist for the village

Timing4

  • Give the village 2 to 3 hours at the very least29
  • Check which market is open on your day3
  • Note the 3:30 PM last train down, and check the earlier one18,19
  • Ask the Visitor Information Centre about tours33

Money and gear3

  • Carry a card for Skyrail and some cash for the stalls36
  • Wear comfortable shoes for the tracks and boardwalks55
  • Bring sunscreen and repellent for the open tracks38

How long to stay, and a plan for the hours

Sources disagree a little on timing, which is useful in itself. Skyrail recommends 2 to 3 hours exploring the village, depending on your itinerary and interests.29 The village site is more generous and suggests at least 4 to 6 hours for a day trip.5 Treat these figures as the low and high end of a sensible range, and let your return time decide where in it you land.

The return times set the shape of the afternoon. On the railway's own timetable the trains down leave Kuranda at 2:45 PM and 3:30 PM, and Skyrail is open until 5:00 PM.18,19,34 The Visitor Information Centre is open 7 days from 10 AM to 4 PM and offers local and regional knowledge for planning.32,33 Wear comfortable shoes, bring water and check the train and Skyrail schedules before you set out.55

If the village is your main reason for coming, consider how you arrive. The site's own trip goes up on the train and down on Skyrail, with pickup in central Cairns, over 7 hours. The travel time takes a large share of the day. The plan below therefore treats the village as a half-day within a longer outing, with the markets first, the wildlife next and the falls last.
