The essentials
The railway and the cableway cross the same gorge by different means. Queensland Rail notes that most of its passengers add a Skyrail trip to the train, which shows the rainforest and the Barron Gorge from a very different angle.6 One climbs the range at ground level through tunnels and over bridges, and the other glides above the canopy.
That is why the operators sell them as a pair. Skyrail combines a one-way cableway with a one-way train into a half or full day, and the booking can start with either the cableway or the railway.7 If you are searching for how the Kuranda Scenic Railway and Skyrail fit together, the short answer is one way on each, with a few hours in the village in the middle, which is how Skyrail and train in Kuranda are meant to be used.
Our listing is built on the same idea. It takes the Kuranda Scenic Railway up to Kuranda and returns by the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway, with hotel pickup in central Cairns at the start and a bus back at the end. The rest of this page explains the layouts, the direction and the budget so that you can judge a package or plan your own.
Four layouts
| Layout | Start | Up | Down |
|---|---|---|---|
| Train up, drive | Park at Skyrail | Train from Freshwater | Skyrail to the car14 |
| Skyrail up, drive | Park at Skyrail | Skyrail to Kuranda | Train, then bus15 |
| Train up, no car | Cairns Central | Morning train | Skyrail, then bus16 |
| Skyrail up, no car | Bus from Cairns City | Skyrail to Kuranda | Afternoon train17 |
The layouts are those on Skyrail's own booking page, and the prices on the combined package are AUD 145.50 for an adult.3
Skyrail lists four combined layouts on its own booking page. In the first, a self-driver parks at Skyrail, takes a bus to Freshwater station, rides the morning train up and returns by Skyrail to the car; in the second, the self-driver rides Skyrail up and the afternoon train down to Freshwater, where a bus returns them to the car.14,15
The other two are for people without a car. One starts at Cairns Central Railway Station, takes the morning train up, comes down by Skyrail and ends with a bus transfer back to Cairns Central; the other is a bus pickup from Cairns City, Skyrail up and the afternoon train down to Cairns Central.16,17 Skyrail adds that if you drive and combine the two, a one-way bus transfer is included in your booking.18
The bus matters because the Skyrail terminal and Freshwater station are located about 7 km apart.19 That gap explains why the layouts are drawn the way they are: whichever half you do first, there is a bus link on the first or the last leg so that nobody ends the day at the wrong terminal. Our times page covers the Freshwater station and its trains.
There is a popular answer and an official shrug, so the choice is yours. The Kuranda village visitor site says most people choose the train on the way up and Skyrail on the way down, for the views.1 Skyrail, for its part, says the cableway experience is identical whichever direction you travel.2
Practical reasons can tip the choice. The morning trains leave early and the afternoon ones run later, so a train-up day starts on a fixed clock and finishes with a cableway that runs until the last ride from Kuranda leaves at 3:15pm.22,23 A Skyrail-up day does the opposite, with the train as the last leg and the last train leaving Kuranda at 3:30pm.24
Our listing makes the choice for you, as a Kuranda train and Skyrail day that goes up by train and returns by Skyrail. The booking page says the provider may change the order and times because of availability or weather, which is worth knowing if you have set your heart on one direction. If the order matters to you, ask the seller before you book, and use the decision helper on this page to see which layout your answers point to.

A premium train
A combined day needs more time than it first appears. Skyrail tells guests to allow 1 and a half hours for a one-way cableway experience and 1 and a half hours for the train, and recommends 2 to 3 hours in Kuranda village.28,29,10 The Kuranda village site suggests at least 4 to 6 hours for a day trip, so a combined day is a long one.30
The clock sets limits at both ends. The first Skyrail departure from Smithfield is at 8:45am, the last one way ride from Kuranda leaves at 3:15pm, and the last train down on Queensland Rail's timetable leaves Kuranda at 3:30pm.23,24 Bookings are made in 15 minute allocations, and once checked in you must travel at your allocated time, so a late train can cost you your slot.11
The stops at Red Peak and Barron Falls eat into the day as well. Skyrail suggests approximately 20 minutes at Red Peak and around 20 minutes at Barron Falls, which fit inside the one way timings it gives.31,32 If you want the markets and a wildlife park too, take the early train, choose the later return and leave a margin, because the day is a single booking with no spare slot.

Afternoon
The listing names a bus pickup at 3:15 PM to the hotel.
Skyrail sells the combined day at AUD 145.50 for an adult and AUD 79.50 for a child, and these are the operator's prices in Australian dollars, not ours.3 Gold Class on the train adds AUD 57 per person one way, or AUD 228 per family one way, and runs only on the 9:30am departure from Cairns Central, the 9:55am departure from Freshwater and the 3:30pm afternoon departure from Kuranda.4,5
Our listing is priced in US dollars and sold through a different seller, from $144 for the self-guided day with hotel pickup in central Cairns. A second listing with hotel transfers starts from $112, and a Gold Class version starts from $161, so the market has several shapes of the same day.
We cannot compare the operator's price with our listing's price number for number, because the currencies, the extras and the exchange rate all differ, and we do not guess. The fair test is to open both booking pages for your date and see what each one includes, then choose the cheaper one for the same day, and to read the cancellation terms of each before paying.

Before you go
Either half can be out of service on a given day. Queensland Rail's day tour page warns that for packages that include Skyrail the cableway may not operate on certain days, and suggests a train-only package as the alternative.33 Skyrail lists closure dates such as 8 and 9 December 2026, 25 December, and 18 to 31 May 2027, and the railway lists its own weeks of maintenance.25,34,35,36
The upgrade of the cableway is the big one to know about. Stage 3 closes the Kuranda line between Red Peak and Kuranda from July to November 2027, with round trips between Smithfield and Red Peak running instead and shuttle bus services between Smithfield and Kuranda.37,38,39 In that period a Skyrail-down day into Kuranda is not available, so ask the seller what replaces it.
Until mid 2027 guests ride new gondolas between Smithfield and Red Peak and then continue on the original cableway.40 That is a transition detail, not a reason to avoid the day, and the new gondolas have step-free boarding and wider doors.41 Check the notices page of the operator for your travel date, and keep a train-only plan in mind.
